So many of you dickheads are talented.
In April, a lot of you may be around for CHSH so Thursday, April 12, I was thinking of trying to get a space at a bar to host an open mic (music, comedy, storytelling, mouth breathing, etc…) to showcase your…
I would do a thing for this.

Los Angeles, CA - January 30, 2012 - Garbage has announced that their fifth studio album, Not Your Kind Of People, will be released in the United States on May 15, 2012, on the band’s label STUNVOLUME. As V Magazine recently put it: “The poster girl for ’90s...
The week ahead
Bronchitis, the kind where I cough up opaque things and don’t sleep from the coughing
Having all the windows in my house replaced, with attendant moving of furniture and removing/replacing window treatments
a night out with friends

a night hosting poker here

Sunday Morning Bliss
Me, to no one in particular: We need to update some of these pictures in the hallway--there's no Leah in them because we put them together before she was here.
Me, to Leah: But she's here now! And we'll love each other forever! (goes in for a hug)
Leah: We're not gonna love each other forever, Daddy. Someday we're all gonna be dead.
Me: ...
So what are you gonna do about it, Scholvin?
Think. Write. Explore. Sketch. Play. Ask. Talk.
Possibly prototype, though that’ll be later.
To those of you who have sent me your thoughts: WOW. And thank you. I may (will) come back to you for more.
And if you have further thoughts on what I put a total of 30 seconds into this morning before ranting, you can email john at scholvin dot com with your ideas, especially the critical ones....
Serious question
Would you pay for a social network that had the following:
A facebook-like news feed (or a tumblr-like dashboard, if you prefer) except that worked well and was highly configurable
The usual interaction mechanisms (comments (possibly nested), likes/hearts, etc.)
Total privacy. Since you pay, there’s no reason to mine and sell your data.
No ads. Revenue comes from users.
Optionally open...

On anger management and social media
My name is John Scholvin and I have an anger problem.
Along with rugged good looks and luxurious, silvery hair, I inherited a vicious temper from my dad. I wish it could have been his jump shot or golf swing, but instead, it’s the ability to go from idle to redline in a couple of milliseconds.
I’ve been working on managing it for twenty years. My anger has damaged me personally and...
Truthful Tuesday
I am finding most corners of the Internets to be very unpleasant lately. Gonna spend some time away.
It’s not you, it’s me. (Except for when it is you.)
Love you more.

Birthday (and other) Bullets
45 sounds a lot older than 44 for some reason. Feels about the same, though.
Past birthday: pre-kid, spent in St. Lucia, floating in a pool, resting a rum cooler on my belly, asking someone to push me over to the bar for another because I was too drunk to paddle.
Current birthday: post-kid, it’s 5 got damn degrees out there, just got back from skating lessons, ate Chinese takeout with...

I just wrote snail mail to everyone that “represents” me to express my opposition to SOPA/Protect IP. Please do the same for your representatives.
A good, old-fashioned paper letter goes a long way when voicing your opinion. This is a good idea.
Yes, but one hitch: snail mail has to go through extensive physical security checks on the way in, and if the issue under...

I wrote my senators
Senator {Durbin/Kirk}:
I write you again to express my opposition to the so-called PIPA bill in the strongest possible terms. While I agree and understand that intellectual property rights are to be respected and the laws around them enforced, this legislation as currently written gives powers that are far too broad to would-be censors.
For starters, it legislates against the engineering...

Listen, I don’t follow pro football anymore, I know nothing about him except what everyone knows - he’s a Christian.
If he’s ever said he’s specifically praying for a win, that’s one thing (although we could have a conversation about prayer as energy and a positive force) but as far as I know, no one knows exactly what he’s praying. The fact that he’s a...

Blithering Heights
I see people are talking about height again…I will take this opportunity to restate Scholvin’s Theorem:
Internet people are never the height you think they are.
(And dog update: he’s doing well…had to leave him at the vet for some unpleasant procedures, but we hope to have him home tonight. Thanks for the mojo.)

tumblr meta: HTML NAME tags not allowed?
I’m trying to footnote something using the HTML editor, and these motherfuckers are stripping out everything after a <a name=”foo”> tag I’m trying to enter.
Footnotes: how do you do them?
Update: Matt suggested using Markdown, which would work if the original post had been done that way, but this is an update to an existing which had been done in their rich text...

truthin'
No usage of any form of the word “curate” is acceptable outside the context of a museum. The verb you’re looking for is “blog” or maybe “post.”
Using CSS to lay out web pages is like like using a framing hammer to demolish a skyscraper. It will eventually get the job done, but there have to be a thousand better ways, right?
I’m getting sick and I...

Connections, today
A late start this morning brought me the moonset through the bare maple across the street. The lingering, thin clouds made it look like something from a horror movie, and I thought it’d make a good picture. No way the iPhone could handle it, so I went back in and got the big boy camera with the new lens and the tripod. I had a little time to futz with it while the car warmed up and...

I went to the funeral of a 45-year-old man today.
Pro tip: don’t spend what little time you have here being a judgmental asshole.
Periodic reminder to hug your people
Just got word that a former coworker of mine passed away suddenly last week…he was just a few days older than me, basically working in the same job, basically the same family status, more or less fit and healthy, a musician in his spare time, etc…
Be sure your people know how you feel about them every day.
