Kurt Vonnegut, in a letter to the book burners of Drake, North Dakota:
I read in the newspaper that your community is mystified by the outcry from all over the country about what you have done. Well, you have discovered that Drake is a part of American civilization, and your fellow Americans can’t stand it that you have behaved in such an uncivilized way. Perhaps you will learn from...

Mega Millions: On Generating Better Quick Picks
Since everyone has Mega Millions fever today, and I am concerned that you might not know I am the biggest nerd in the universe, let me share my shame with you: a few years ago, I wrote a program to generate “better” quick picks.
Here’s the source. The picture below is a sample output run.
Why do I think my quick picks are better?
[[MORE]]I am basing that on an admittedly large...

From the mouths of 7-year-olds
Me at 9am, mostly joking: OK, I'm ready for my nap!
Leah: Daddy, no one takes naps this early!
Danny: Daddy might need one, though. He doesn't sleep well most nights.
Waterparking
We’re back at the same waterpark resort in the Dells we went to last spring break.
Out of the ~1000 rooms here, we are in the one immediately next door to the one we had last year. “Oh. Put those people by the elevator again.”
Back at the ranch, the professional firearms instructor is housesitting, as usually, in case any bad guys have any ideas.
If you’re feeling bad...

Asking for help, a novelty for me
naimhe:
Cary’s son, my nephew, needs to come home to Illinois from Baltimore. His physical and mental health are becoming more and more in jeopardy and when he has to get off the phone because there’s gunfire, something needs to be done. Having lived in Detroit for 9 months, I know the desperation he’s feeling.
Contrary to my pride, and unbeknowst to Cary who would never approve, I figured out...

Dear 12-year-old Me
Here’s the bad news: the next two years of your life are going to be the worst.
But that’s also the good news. After you make it through these next two years—and you will make it, even when you feel like you might not—you’re going to go to a different high school than the rest of those stupid fucks and never see any of them ever again. You’ll go to a college...
Re: stress, it looks like the adventure of moving was a bit much for dad today. He’s ok, it seems, but we took him to the ER to get checked out. Possibly an anxiety attack. He’s being tested, etc., and in good spirits. I’m heading over there later once I get this house in better order.
Positive mojo gratefully accepted in the meantime…or scotch…
Stress
All of it.

From the Associated Press:
Job seekers getting asked for Facebook usernames, passwords: An increasing number of employers are asking job applicants for access to their social networks, raising questions about the legality of the practice. Some states, including Illinois, have already introduced legislation that would prohibit public agencies from asking for the login...

Are you just waiting on the world to change, John?
Must be my quarter-life crisis.

Ruminations at 0-dark-30
Insomnia after two days of physical labor is some bullshit.
Listening to the hum of all my neighbors’ air conditioners in March: unsettling.
I mean, is this it? Did we pass the tipping point? Should I be stocking up on cases of Ensure like they did when they found out the meteor was coming? It could hit 90 this week.
I’m not wearing socks to work. Maybe ever again.
College...

Another hail of bullets.
There comes a reckoning for men of conscience whose professional fortunes are aligned in opposition to an external, more general good. Men of the other kind just keep grinding.
I should have installed this astronomy app a long time ago. I realized yesterday I can run it in my office during the day, and it (of course) still works and shows me the stars that are always...

Presented without comment, except for in the way that when people say “presented without comment,” that is usually a wry comment in itself.
