Question for Doctor Who fans

Which, apparently, everyone on the planet is but me.

I’ve never seen the show, but it’s clear by casual contact that Daleks are the bad guys.

My question: how can something that looks so ridiculous be evil? They look like a cross between R2D2 and the “Danger Will Robinson!” robot, only with less apparent mobility and what appears to be cute little buttons all over their surfaces. Boop!

I am not casting aspersions on your show, which I’m sure is wonderful. But WTF is up with the rolling mailboxes as primary threat?

  2. penbleth said: They are bins, not mailboxes. Old fashioned metal bins with a sink plunger for a naughty bit. Dr. Who was fab years ago when I was a kid, it is a kids’ programme.
  3. monkeyfrog said: I haven’t ever watched it.
  4. kimalah said: Lack of empathy, compassion and for lack of a better word humanity is frightening in any shape or form. That said, I love the plunger appendages.
  5. fuiru said: It’s suspension of disbelief carried forward from terrible 1960s BBC TV budgets. The daleks were among the scariest original villains, which included ‘Bin Bag Full of Jelly’, ‘Man with Wig’ and ‘Invisible Pogo Stick’.
  6. lindstifa said: No emotions! Only purpose is to exterminate all other beings! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!
  7. kalamazu said: Yeah, I don’t get it either.
  8. do-over said: I’ve never seen it either.
  9. rartastic said: They are driven to exterminate all other life forms but the daleks. They are not open to reason or alteration of this goal. And they talk funny. And that plunger thing on their heads can vaporize anyone.
